As a business owner, finding ways to grow and adapt while maintaining your core strengths is vital for long-term success. In this final installment of my '10 Steps to Growing Your Revenue' series, I’m excited to share an impactful strategy: McKinsey's 3 Horizons Framework. This tool helps you map out your business growth in the short, medium, and long term.
The 3 Horizons Framework: A Roadmap for Growth
McKinsey’s 3 Horizons Framework provides a structured way to balance immediate needs with future ambitions. Let’s explore each horizon:
Horizon 1: Immediate Focus on Core Business
Horizon 1 is all about the "here and now." This includes maintaining your core business activities and identifying actions that drive immediate revenue. For example, in my business, I’m focusing on delivering value through one-on-one coaching and group coaching programs. What’s currently working in your business? Keep that momentum going and maximize your short-term wins.
Horizon 2: Medium-Term Goals to Solidify Your Position
Horizon 2 focuses on initiatives that strengthen your market position over the next 6-12 months. For me, this means securing public speaking opportunities for 2025. My goal is to book one speaking engagement per month to expand my reach and attract new clients. Think about what initiatives can elevate your business in the medium term—whether it’s partnerships, launching new programs, or scaling existing ones.
Horizon 3: Long-Term Innovation and Growth
Horizon 3 is where you innovate and explore new opportunities for future growth. For my business, this includes developing strategic partnerships and expanding my client base through diverse online masterminds. What new ideas or services could transform your business in the next 2-3 years? Take the time to dream big and start planning for the long term.
Applying the Framework to Your Business
Here’s how you can get started with the 3 Horizons Framework:
-
Identify One Action per Horizon: Map out actions for short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals.
-
Focus on Immediate Revenue Drivers: Like my one-to-one coaching programs, determine what’s generating revenue now and double down on those efforts.
-
Plan for Mid-Term Projects: Think about partnerships, new initiatives, or market expansions that will strengthen your position in the next year.
-
Dream Big for the Future: Envision innovative projects that will set your business apart in the years to come.
